Named after his eldest son, Peter Coulthard founded ‘Hayton Coulthard’ in 1916. Ironically Hayton was not interested in haulage and went into farming. Peter’s first vehicle was a motorbike and sidecar delivering newspapers around Galloway before buying his first lorry to collect milk cans for a local dairy. During the Second World War, a percentage of lorries were commandeered from haulage firms for the war effort and to safeguard the future of the company, second son Jimmy, who had now taken control of the business, set up Dunmhor Transport.
Jimmy died in 1959 and his son Duncan left school aged 14 to help his mother run the business, taking over complete control in 1967 and went on to oversee the company thrive in the 70s and 80s. Duncan Snr retired in 2000 with Duncan Jnr, the 4th generation Coulthard to take the helm, becoming Managing Director. Hayton Coulthard Freight Forwarding Ltd operate a modern fleet pulling 120 trailers including the temperature controlled trailer modelled here.
